If you are one of those people who don't quite like the 'standard' options - you might want to consider plywood. Ply cabinets add a certain Nordic character to a space. I would recommend doing this in a minimal / contemporary home (as it definitely doesn't scream 'hamptons' 'provincial' or 'country'.
It also looks great with timber handles!
